The Ministry of Education focuses on violence prevention from two aspects: proactive and reactive. Proactive means prevention activities. For example, we devote a week during which the whole system focuses on increasing awareness to this subject and how to respond to it.
This year the issue of disclosure and help seeking was chosen, based on the Traiana projects' results showing that less than 40% of children regard the teacher as a person to whom they can refer to when confronted with violence. In addition, about 25% of the children reported they did not know who to refer to if needed. On the other hand, they would turn to an adult they consider as trustful in case of emergency. Thereby the aim of the intervention is to change students' perception of their teacher and make him or her a trustful figure to turn to. A manual that includes indicators of how to identify victimization, how to respond to a possible victimized child, how to conduct an interview in addition to experiential workshop on these issues was distributed to both teachers and students.
