Massage balls is a technique which allows the therapist to treat the injured body of the client, who longs for the feel of touch, but without actually touching the body. During my work as a movement therapist with girls at risk, I discovered that many girls experience their bodies as a burden that they have to cope with. Clients report physical pain on a regular basis, they speak of muscle aches, physical illness resulting from stress and on some occasions, the body even becomes a source of self-harm, and there is a desire to disengage from it. Clients often express the need to feel good and receive calming physical touch, and seek to experience their bodies as a safe "home" for themselves. At the same time, they express a fear and mistrust of their bodies due to their physical experience of suffering and pain. This technique promotes reconciliation with their rejected and hurting bodies and corrects the client's basic experience with the body. The body once again becomes a safe, containing and soothing space for the client. The rolling of the various types of balls on the client's body gradually becomes a substitute for touch and allows a variety of sensations from a soft hug-like touch, to a deep touch that eases muscle pain. Working with the body evokes repressed memories and feelings through which the client operates in everyday life. Discussing these memories and feelings from the physical experience eases the client's physical and mental state and allows for their integration. During therapy, the client learns to listen to his/her body and its needs, and will even learn to use this tool independently when the need for relaxation and treatment of stress arises.
