גישת ההדרכה מושפעת מן ההבנה כי האדם הינו תולדה של האובייקטים המופנמים הנושא בתוכו ואף פועל דרכם בעולם. בשדה ההדרכה, דרך עבודה בעזרת דימויים באופן בטוח ורחוק מספיק מחד בשילוב עם ההדהוד הגופני שהם מעוררים, הנוגע באופן בלתי אמצעי בתוכן פנימי זה, ניתן להגיע לתובנות עמוקות ביחס לטיפול וכן לקדם באופן משמעותי אזורי עיוורון ותקיעות. דרך דיאלוג פנימי אשר נוצר, מתאפשרת אינטגרציה ותובנה בעזרת העיבוד עם המדריך. בנוסף, התבוננות על מערך היחסים המקבילים וה"מודלינג" לעבודה: מדריך- מודרך/מטפל-מטופל, ניתן לסייע ולעבור דרך מחסומים התפתחותיים מאתגרים בטיפול ובהדרכה.
